The haveli of Ahsanullah Khan

Scroll down to content

Ahsanullah Khan was the personal physician or hakim to Bahadur Shah Zafar and he was also a great friend to both the Emperor and Mirza Ghalib. He tried to negotiate with the British on behalf of the Emperor during the revolt of 1857 and nearly paid with his life for that. His haveli covered almost an entire mohalla in the Lal Kuan area. Excelsior cinema once ran in the area which was the baithak of the haveli. Most of the haveli has now vanished and that which remains is in a complete shambles. I was lucky that a neighbour across the street allowed me access to their roof. This gave me a bird’s eye view of the crumbling haveli. No one lives here anymore. A guard stays to guard the ruins but he says the present owners have moved to Hyderabad.
